The brainchild of Sylvie and Gilles, Street Art City has become a living canvas for artists to express their art in freedom and on a large scale. Transforming the ugly concrete buildings from an abandoned PTT training camp that was abandoned more than 20 years ago to a celebration of street art is an astonishing and uplifting experience - especially since Street Art City is a true mini-city, nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Allier known as the birthplace of the kings of France. Selected artists from all over the world can take the time to focus on their creativity and their interaction with other artists, thereby enriching their experience and their art.
Sylvie welcomed us into the artist bar, gave us a brief history of how Street Art City came about and pointed to some of the many murals and gallery that the artists exhibit and sell their work. Her passion for this business, despite the fact that she admits that she is not from an art background, is clear and extremely inspiring, but she quickly released us to wander around and discover this unusual place for ourselves. Her goal is to encourage visitors from all walks of life to immerse themselves in the universe of street art and to be transported through the experience. I see that it gives her great pleasure to see and hear how each person responds to this unique environment. It was indeed a journey in which time was suspended when one was transported by the more than life-size creativity of the murals that transformed these everyday structures. An inspiring experience!
Of course, photos can't really do justice, so I'd encourage you to add this to your bucket list and visit sooner rather than later - you won't regret it and in fact I'm sure you'll want to return like I intend - often!
